On August 10th, the Newlyn Street UWF unit celebrated the missionary work of Deaconess Joy Prim with a tea. Joy is a United Methodist missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries serving as a welfare case officer for migrant domestic workers. As she explains, her faith journey and missionary work “has been influenced and led by the purpose of the United Women in Faith (formerly United Methodist Women.” She grew up in Statesville with a mother and grandmother who were members; she became a member at the age of 12. The foundation her grandmother and mother laid for caring for issues of women, youth and children in the local community and around the world sparked her “yearning for mission work.” Joy is currently based at the Mission for Migrant Workers at St. John’s Cathedral in Hong Kong, SAR (special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China). As a missionary, “she provides stability and continuity to the mission’s social justice work.”
