Our Brief History
On July 10, 1921, under the leadership of Reverend Burgess, members gathered in a small county schoolhouse on Roseland Street, which came to be known as Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. A short time later in 1922, a little brown church planted its roots on the corner of Roseland and Newlyn Street.
In 1939, the Methodist Episcopal Church, the South Methodist Church and the Methodist Protestant Church unified to become the Methodist Church. After the merger, the First Protestant Methodist Church in Greensboro was also named Grace. Our church agreed to change its name to Newlyn Street. The United Methodist Church (UMC) was officially formed in 1968, resulting from the merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church--we then became Newlyn Street United Methodist Church.
In 1953, under the leadership of Reverend L.E. Mabry, our dreams became a reality as we broke ground for a new sanctuary. In 2024, Newly Street UMC became a Lighthouse Church within the Western North Carolina Conference.
In accordance with Psalm 113:3, Newlyn Street UMC has for 104 years strived to be faithful in practicing “from the rising of the sun to its going down, The Lord’s name is to be praised.” God has been merciful, gracious, and abundant in His blessings to our little church with a big heart and we are excited to see what the next 100 years bring us!
